Das Boot/The Boat DB 543

a German U-boat as it prowls the North Atlantic. Starring Wolfgang Peterson.
This is the full screen version.
Das Boot BB 22213
1982, ca 210 min., Directors Cut - Digitally remastered, 60 minutes of extra
footage! You know the story, the film has been on the market for years. Now
see the Directors Cut, with new footage and additional interviews. Six Academy
Award nominations. The most expensive, most successful motion picture in the
history of German cinema, this gripping tale follows the daring patrol of U-96,
one of the famed German U-boats know as the "gray wolves." Prowling
the North Atlantic, they challenged the British Navy at every turn. The crew
aboard the U-96 is graphically portrayed in a desperate life-and-death struggle,
coping with endless hours of claustrophobic boredom at sea, which quickly gives
way to terror when confronting the enemy. Relentlessly under attack, the U-96
is forced to unheard of depths, the creaking hull threatening to collapse and
crush the panicked sailors. The Boat delivers an amazingly accurate account
of Germany's elite U-boat crewmen, as it deliberately hammers away at the tragic
waste of war. Please note: This version is in letterbox format! (Black bar on
top and bottom of screen). German language with English subtitles.

Die Ehe der Maria Braun RC
60718
1978, 102 min. - The most celebrated film of Fassbinder's incredibly prolific
career, and probably of the entire new German cinema. Here his favorite actress,
Hanna Schygulla, stars as a post WW II survivalist who uses equal doses of seduction
and self-preservation to keep afloat in the troubles, cut-throat society of
a Germany rebuilding its ravaged countryside and spirit. This deeply moving
film is a successful mix of soap opera, sexual politics, offbeat comedy and
epic romance. Schygulla's shattering performance as Maria Braun established
her as one of Europe's finest actresses. German language with English subtitles.

Effi Briest NY 22992
135 min., b&w - Effi Briest is a radiant beauty, a vivacious blend of naiveté
and intelligence, candidness and willful self-interest. At a young age she is
married to a much older Prussian diplomat and carried away to a remote Baltic
port. There she drifts into a brief passionless affair with a local womanizer.
The full effects are felt only years later, in a chilling manifestation of the
Prussian legal code. Fassbinder's faithful, penetrating adaptation of Germany's
most famous 19th-century novel make this his most classical and elegant film.
Starring Hanna Schygulla, Ulli Lommel. German language with English subtitles.
Europa, Europa ORN 5064
1991, German and Russian with English subtitles, 115 min., color - Starring
Marco Hofschneider. Directed by Agnieszaka Holland. The true story of Solomon

Every Man For Himself and God Against All (Same
as 'The Mystery of Kaspar Hauser') VC 3035
1975 - In 1828, Kaspar Hauser, a young man who had been isolated from the world
in a dark cellar since birth, mysteriously appears, abandoned, in the main square
of a German town. His story is the focus of this powerful, intensely provocative
film by German director Werner Herzog. Covered with sores and petrified by his
new surroundings, Kaspar ("Bruno S.") is found clutching only a prayer
book in one hand and a scribbled not in the other - a note that serves to obscure
his appearance rather than explain it. The townspeople decide to take in Kaspar,
who cannot speak or write and who can barely eat properly, and educate him in
the ways of civilization. But it is an education that Kaspar resists, challenging
the rules and conventions that would stifle his innocent perception of life.
This is a fascinating film that will haunt the memory. Starring Bruno S., Walter
Ladegast, Brigitte Mira. Direction and screenplay by Werner Herzog. German language
with English subtitles.
Even Dwarfs Started Small AB
963
B/W, 96 min. Not Rated 1969, German with English subtitles - Written and directed
by Werner Herzog. Featuring a cast composed entirely of little people, this
film is a brutal, uncompromising allegory about the consequences of imprisonment
and rebellion. The inmates have taken over an institution in a bleak and savage
world in which everyone is a dwarf. As one of the institution's directors holds
a rebel hostage while issuing orders for calm, the other inmates run amok, smashing
equipment, setting fires, fighting for power and tormenting two blind prisoners.
In this land of reversed proportions, these revolutionary outcasts not only
destroy the symbols of civilization- cars, typewriters and dinner plates-but
trees, flowers and animals as well.
F
Far Away, So Close (A Wim Wender Film) FA 63

- When an angel dares to cross the line, he stumbles into the harsh reality
of post cold war Berlin and finds himself engaged in deadly combat to protect
the mortals he loves. The gravity-defying imagery of director Wim Wenders gives
wings to his daring film of suspense and intrigue. Otto Sander and Nastasja
Kinski lead an all-star ensemble cast that includes Horst Buchholz and Willem
Dafoe with cameo appearances by Peter Falk and Mikkhail Gorbachov. Hit-packed
soundtrack features the music of U2 and Lou Reed. Winner 1993 Cannes Film Festival
Grand Jury Prize. Take flight for a spiritual film odyssey impossible to forget.

FeuertaufeIH 508 SUB
Ca. 1940, German language with English subtitles, b&w, ca. 90 min. - The
legend of the Luftwaffe begins in Poland, the first victim of Hitler's Blitzkrieg.
Combat cameramen filmed the aerial campaign, showing preparations for flight,
massive air strikes, and the appalling devastation wreaked upon Polish towns
and armies. Highlighted by a lengthy, riveting sequence depicting the siege
of Warsaw, Feuertaufe inspired Germany with pride and confidence and foreign
viewers with dread. Norbert Schultze's original score lyrically enhances this
propaganda masterpiece.
Fitzcarraldo WA 24003
1982, 150 min. - Dir. Werner Herzog. Deep in the Amazon, a man obsessed with
smoldering ambition, struggles to make his fortune. His method lies in reaching
an inaccessible forest of fourteen million rubber tieres. His madness burns
in his goal: to build his own personal opera house in the jungle. For almost
five years, Herzog labored to ring his epic to the screen. On location in Peru
and Brazil, he faced delay, illness, accident, political unrest, even the defection
of stars originally cast in "Fitzcarraldo" after shooting had commenced.
Against all odds, Herzog succeeded. Star Klaus Kinski orders a 320-ton steamship
to be hauled uphill by hundreds of Indian workers. Inch by inch, the ship makes
its bizarre portage to the river tributary which will carry Fizcarraldo to his
goal. In cool irony, the strains of grand opera float out over a jungle oblivious
to the meaning of man and his works. Starring Klaus Kinski and Claudia Cardinale.
An outstanding movie! Rated PG. German language with English subtitles.
Forget Mozart WBF 8029
1986, 93 min. - Directed of Salvo Luther and starring Armin Mueller-Stahl, Catarina
Raacke. An intelligent, beautifully crafted biography of Mozart structured like
a classic detective thriller. Vienna, December 5th, 1791. Friends and associates
of Mozart are gathered at his deathbed. Officially, they are in mourning, but
the small room is filled with mistrust, fear and suspicion. The Chief of the
Secret Police is present and Mozart's short life is unrolled in a dramatic hearing
- his musical genius, his obstinate love of freedom, his boundless lust of life,
and his extreme passions. But Mozart is not only portrayed as a genius, but
as a man with ordinary fears, strengths and weaknesses. His life is a hectic
one. He is obsessed by the conviction that he does not have much time to live.
German language with English subtitles.
Fox and His Friends NY 19589
1975, 123 min. - Starring and directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder. A
lower class carnival entertainer professionally known as "Fox, the Talking
Head" (played by Fassbinder himself) strikes it rich, after a life of hard
knocks, by winning the lottery. His new-found wealth attracts an elegant, bourgeois
lover, who proceeds to vamp Fox as thoroughly and unthinkingly as Theda Bara.
This ill-fated romance between the capitalist and the "lottery queen"
makes for one of Fassbinder's most skillfully wrought films. German language
with English subtitles.
Flaming Ears FA 936
1991, Austria, Unrated, ca. 84 min. - A pop sci-fi lesbian fantasy feature set
in the year 2700 in the fictitious burnt out city of Asche. It follows the tangled
lives of three women: Spy, comic book artist, Volley, a performance artist and
sexed-up pyromaniac, and Nun, an amoral alien with a predilection for reptiles.
It's a story of love and revenge, and an anti-romantic plea for love in its
many forms. It's also a story laced with sex, violence and a pulsating soundtrack,
a "cyberdyke" movie, stimulating both the body and the brain. German
language with English subtitles.
Friedemann Bach DT 330
1941, b&w, ca. 100 min. - With Gustaf Gruendgens. Directed by Traugott Mueller.
This war-time, escapist feature is the rather bizarre story of the eldest son
of J. S. Bach, Friedemann. He is a gifted musician, but feels so confined by
his autocratic family that he ends up wasting his talent. His life ends tragically,
in debauchery and penury. German language with English subtitles.
G

Bertold Brecht with Lotte Lenya and Rudolph Forster. A "Beggar's Opera"

Germany in Autumn (Deutschland im Herbst)
VWA 1094
124 min. - 5 German directors including Werner Fassbinder present a segment
of their work. An outcry against hysteria, hypocrisy, and inhumanity. Throughout
the decade, the Red Army Fraction - an outgrowth of the notorious Baader-Meinhof
Group - had waged a campaign of terror against those in power, and the government's
escalating efforts to root out the terrorists had resulted in a virtual state
of siege by the Autumn of 1977. Here is an immediate, impassioned response to
the events of that Autumn: the RAF kidnapping and murder of industrialist Hans-Martin
Schleyer and the subsequent, highly suspicious deaths of three imprisoned Baader-Meinhof
terrorists. German language with English subtitles. Starring Volker Schoendorff,
Beate Mainka-Jellinghaus, Maximiliane Mainka, Edgar Reitz, Katja Rupe, u.v.a.
Germany, Pale Mother
1979, German with English subtitles, ca. 123 min. - Eva mattes, the star of
the films of Fassbinder and Herzog, delivers the performance of a lifetime in
this key work of the New German Cinema. A powerful love story set during and
after the Nazi era, 'Germany, Pale Mother' is also an extraordinary dialogue
with the German past. Sanders-Brahms explores the private lives of a young bride
and her Nazi soldier husband, and her parents, by-standers who tolerated Hitler.
The film is also a moving portrait of a remarkably strong woman. Lena (Eva Mattes)
is raped by the American conquerors, accused of infidelity by her husband, yet
remains defiant, with her daughter at her side. German language with English
subtitles.
